Illustrator - Creating a Shiny Isometric Vector Icon Tutorial

Okay folks, here is my first in series of design tutorials.

I’m always amazed with those original mac icons and the effects they use on them.

In this tutorial, we will draw a 3d looking glass box Icon with Illustrator; which might also give you and idea of how to create isometric angled objects with Illustrator.

Allright, here we go!:

Step1:

1.jpg

Create a new RGB file with illustrator. Mine is a 500×500px RGB file. Draw a blue same size-cornered square.

Step 2:

2.jpg

Appy Effect/3d/Bevel and select the Isometric Top angle with a 100pt Extrude Depth

Step 3:

3.jpg

Edit/Expand Appearance and ungroup the object until you can separately edit the box pieces. Don’t forget to break apart and remove the compound path.

Step 4:

41.jpg
Select the bottom corners and add to shape area, using pathfinder. And expand. You can do this by alt+clicking on the add to shape area option.

Step 5:

5.jpg

Select a lighter blue fill color for the bottom shape

Step 6:

6.jpg
Apply a darkblue-to-lightblue radial gradient on your bottom shape.

Step 7:

7.jpg
Apply the Step 6 to the same for the top square.

Step 8:

8.jpg
Combine the top and bottom objects by grouping them.

Step 9:

9.jpg
Make a copy of the combined object and place in front of the existing box with multiply blend more.

Step 10:

10.jpg
Duplicate another copy of the original box and ungroup the inside objects.

Step 11:

11.jpg
Combine the shapes into one piece by pathfinder options -> Add to shape area

Step 12:

12.jpg
Fill the final shape with white to black radial gradient.

Wait, we’re not done yet =) Onwards to the next page!
